the other 表示“另一個”，比如：Give me the other one not this one. 給我那一個，不是這一個。the others 表示“其余的”，如：This dictionary is better than the others. 這本字典比別的好。other 是“其他的”、“另外的”意思，既可以作形容詞，也可以作代詞，如：other one或other two students。others 通常用來泛指，意思為“其它的人（物或事等）”，如：This dictionary is better than others。another 也有“另外的”、“又一”的意思，可作形容詞，也可作代詞，表示在原有基礎上再加一（些），至少有三個。如：another one。其他形式的other，如the other和the others，分別表示總數為二時的“另外一個”和特指的“其余的全部”。the other常與one搭配使用，the others只能作代詞。any other 后接復數名詞表示“一些其他……”；接單數名詞時，表示“其他任何一個……”。如：any other book。one… the other 用于兩個事物；some… the others 用于三個以上；some… others，others… others 用于泛指。在一定范圍內，除去一部分人/物，剩余的全部用the others。泛指別的人或物時，用others。如：the others = the rest 剩余的全部。another作代詞時，意思與作形容詞時一樣，不能加任何冠詞，后面也不能加s。
