1. The first destroyer of the United States was named Bainbridge (DD-1). 2. The keel of the Bainbridge was laid down in Philadelphia on August 15, 1899. 3. The construction contract for the Bainbridge was awarded to the Neafie & Levy Ship and Engine Building Company. 4. The Bainbridge was successfully launched on August 27, 1901. 5. The launching ceremony was presided over by New York Governor Charles E. Bailey. 6. The Bainbridge entered active service in the United States Navy on February 12, 1903.
